Don't Pass on Breakfast

Question: Should I eat breakfast?

Answer: Yes! You should definitely not skip breakfast; it's the most important meal of the day. You can eat pretty much anything for breakfast and not feel guilty because whatever you eat will be burned off during your day. Eating breakfast gives you energy to start your day and gives you many benefits.

You should try to have a well-balanced breakfast that includes some whole grains like a whole wheat bagel, toast, or oatmeal. You need also to stick to the low-fat milk or skim milk and have some fresh fruit juice. The fruit juice should be 100%, so make sure and check the nutritional label to make sure you're not drinking pure sugar. A fresh piece of fruit is always nice too; try a banana, apple, pear, blueberries, strawberries, or anything colorful, because they carry healthy antioxidants. You also need some protein in your breakfast to help keep you full longer. You can do this through protein shakes, fruit smoothies, and eggs.

By not eating breakfast, you are risking diabetes, heart problems, obesity, and the morning slump. If you skip breakfast and eat in the middle of the day, you'll be more likely to eat more because you'll have more hunger throughout the day. You also make bad food choices throughout the day because you don't think about what you're going to eat - you just want anything you can get your hand on. You'll also have harder time paying attention in class or at work, and you won't be very pleasant to be around either!

Don't have time for breakfast? There is always time; you can warm up oatmeal in the microwave in two minutes. You could also grab a granola bar that is loaded with fiber and a yogurt. Fresh fruit is always an option too!

Next time you wake up and are having the morning slump, don't skip breakfast, because you're setting yourself up for a long day and potential health risks.
