Benefits of WIC
WIC supports low-income women, children and infants by providing nutritious foods, information on eating healthy, and helps with health care. WIC provides information and counseling on breastfeeding, because breast milk is the best food for babies during their first year of life. WIC also tries to strengthen nutritional education and they try to help in choosing healthy behaviors throughout life. WIC also encourages immunization screening and help in getting you with a health care provider to get your infant or child immunized. WIC also provides for low-income families food packages. The food packages include nutritional food that most of low-income families are lacking.
To be eligible for WIC you must: meet categorical, residential, income, and nutritional risk requirements. They target pregnant women especially to make sure their babies are born as healthy as possible. They also target infants and children. You must live in the state in which you apply and must be between 100% of the federal poverty guideline. You can also apply for the program if you receive food stamps, Medicaid, and already receive other forms of federal aid. You must also have a nutritional risk based on medical reasons or dietary reasons.
WIC benefits more then 8 million people each month. Participants in the program receive foods that are rich in protein, iron, calcium, and vitamins. These nutrients are usually lacking in their diets. Their program greatly benefits single low-income pregnant mothers by giving them nutritional options. By having these options before and after their pregnancy it’ll greatly increase the chances of having healthy children. WIC also educates them on what foods are nutritious and when and where to get immunizations. All of their efforts together greatly improve the standard of living for millions.
